Workers' Compensation Insurance
When an employee gets hurt on the job, workers' compensation insurance pays for their medical care and lost wages, and protects your business from the lawsuit that could otherwise follow. Nothum Insurance helps Missouri employers find the right workers' comp carrier, keep the policy accurate, and control costs over time.
Our agent holds the Certified Insurance Counselor (CIC) designation and has years of commercial insurance experience working with contractors and small businesses.
Is Workers' Comp Required in Missouri?
Under Missouri law:
• Most employers with five or more employees must carry workers' compensation
• Construction industry employers must carry it with one or more employees
• Employers below these thresholds can still choose to buy it, and many contracts require it
The Missouri Division of Workers' Compensation (labor.mo.gov/dwc) is the official source for the rules, and we're happy to walk through your situation with you.
What Does Workers' Comp Cover?
A workers' compensation policy typically includes:
• Medical expenses for work-related injuries and illnesses
• Lost wages while the employee recovers
• Permanent disability benefits
• Death benefits for dependents
• Employer's liability coverage if an employee sues over a workplace injury
We'll make sure your policy, certificates and waivers of subrogation meet the requirements of your contracts.
How Workers' Comp Premiums Are Figured
Your premium is based on three main factors:
• Classification codes for the type of work your employees do
• Your estimated annual payroll
• Your experience modification factor (e-mod), which reflects your claims history
Misclassified payroll is one of the most common reasons businesses overpay or get a surprise bill after the annual audit. We review your classes and payroll estimates up front, and help with safety and return-to-work practices that can bring your e-mod down over time.
